Visual Design

Wattbot logos
Wattbot Logo
icon for future renewable energy

For a renewable energy start-up logo competition, we created a series of logos that captured the company's philosophy, that were clean, beautiful and scalable for different services. We started with sketches on paper napkins and chose sprout as a motif for renewal and beauties in nature — what the company strives to preserve. We then chose the fonts and colors that we felt most complemented the designs.

booklet
Typography Booklet
applying visual elements for longer texts

In this project, all the visual elements were carefully considered to create a booklet that is aesthetically pleasing, easy to read, and representatives of the content of the booklet. The challenges included visually distinguishing multiple pages, balance between readability and playfulness. I sketched out numbers of block layouts first, then determined the grids, font elements and other design elements. The final booklet was printed and bound with a cover.

quote
Expressive Quote
visual expression of spoken words

The task was to represent the personal interpretation of a quote visually while considering design elements such as position, letterspaccing, linespacing and contrast. First a quote was chosen, then it was placed in a constraint of 7" white square with no color, an assigned font and a stroke. Eventually, different fonts, colors and weight were permitted. From this assignment, I learned to build up a design from bottom-up — to carefully add elements that are only needed to enhance the visual space.

Aikido Seminar Tshirt
bonding memories for martial artists

Tshirts are great way to promote and remember a martial arts seminar. They are also important resources for funding the event. I incorporated the design principles learned from Communication Design Fundamentals for a design that is appropriate yet memorable Tshirt for a wide variety of audiences.

representing CMU HCII

For representing the CMU MHCI group for CHI conference, I used the familiar motif of sticky notes that everyone in the field recognizes while emphasizing the program's uniqueness using texts and orientations of graphical elements.
